|A Very Useful Book, Handy, and Lets Others Know You’re Looking for Hidden Mickeys,
Before purchasing this book, we had simply considered getting a Hidden Mickey app. We figured that if we were already going to carry a device through the parks, adding an app wouldn’t increase the bulk or the weight in our backpacks. (This was one of our concerns about purchasing a book.) We decided against an app, however, in large part due to the fact that our devices tend to be battery hogs; once a device goes down, an app would no longer be usable. So, we settled on a book. (It turns out that this book fit into our backpacks ok, and my son didn’t much mind carrying it around the parks with him. Oftentimes, he simply carried it in his hands.)
Aside from not needing a battery, this book also provided my son with the opportunity to make notes next to each Hidden Mickey that he found. He oftentimes simply made a check mark and noted the date. (The margins provided ample space for such notes.) As my son carried this book around (everywhere), its distinctive cover stood out to Disney Cast Members, so that many of them engaged him with, “Oh, are you looking for Hidden Mickeys? Did you see the one over here?”
As a field guide, this book often led us right up to the Hidden Mickeys. There were a few (in the challenge section, “My Favorite Hidden Mickeys”) that did prove a little too difficult for us to find. In the end, my son went back through his notes and counted up over 180 Hidden Mickeys that he did find. Many of these were so “hidden” that we would not have even known that they existed, except through the information given to us in this book.
