Russell Johnson is an expert in the history and culture of Memphis, TN. When I heard that he was working on this project, I immediately pre-ordered a copy for myself. As a Memphis native, I was excited to dig through the material. When I received my copy, I was well pleased with the results.

Beautiful historical photographs of Memphis, TN are side by side with current photographs of the same subjects, providing a striking visual commentary on the growth and progress of this fine southern city. The accompanying paragraphs are filled with unique insight and fun historical facts. Mr. Johnson couldn’t have done a better job putting this project together. Memphis Then & Now has become an instant favorite in my household, a classic work that I will enjoy for many years to come.

As a Memphian for most of my 52 years, I have seen Memphis go from a vibrant city, to a decaying inner city with suburbs, and in the last 20 years, to a reemerging destination of choice in the south. A critical part of this renewal has been the capturing of Memphis history through the preservation and restoration of important sites throughout the city. One cannot fully appreciate Memphis without understanding her history.

Memphis Then and Now provides beautiful photographs of these important historical sites, as they were, and as they are; usually shot from the same angle. Accompanying each photograph is a well-written paragraph placing the locale in a historical and cultural context. The author is a highly regarded expert on Memphis history and is the creator of MemphisHistory.com, an authoritative website. Even long-time residents will be surprised at the historical significance of many of these locations.

Each event happens in a place, and these places endure in one form or another. Viewing the history of Memphis from the perspective of these sites is enjoyable and enlightening. An excellent book and highly recommended!

I bought this book for my sister-in-law and she absolutely loves it. She put it in her living-room for all to read. My wife’s family is from Memphis, some are native. My family has commented many times that they appreciate the facts written by the author. Well done.
