During the 1950s, the Cinchett Neon Sign Company came to be Tampa’s best-known sign maker. When the city planned to build a zoo, the mayor asked Cinchett to design the new sign. Fried chicken king Colonel Sanders had the sign company create all the neon work for his first two Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Central Florida, and soon after, other reputable businesses came calling.

I was born and raised in Tampa and am familiar with many of the stores, restaurants, department stores, etc. shown in John Cinchett’s books. Like many Tampa natives I miss those buildings that shaped Tampa’s history. Though they are gone, they continue to live in the author’s books. These books are a wonderful way to see what made Tampa such a unique and interesting city and to see the history that has been lost. I highly recommend these books.

I sent this to my daughter, who used to live in Tampa and studied historic preservation in grad school. I had hoped she would find it interesting and a nice addition to all her other books on various aspects of historic architectural details (old gas stations, movie theaters and motels) and photography. Whether she liked it or not is unknown.
