The Gift of Magic (Archers Beach Book 5)

Archers Beach is a more-than-slightly battered resort town on the coast of Maine, but there’s something a little bit special about it. Magic works there, sort-of, and the trenvay–the beings that guard the land and the people–work their own kind of magic. Includes two short stories, “The Gift of Music,” and “The night don’t seem so lonely.” Both stories were previously published at Baen.com

I don’t know how I happened to land this pair of short stories on my Kindle, other than that I’m targeted as a Fantasy Fan (as well as Other Things Fan) and interested in new releases. I had never read Ms Lee before. It’s called in its title “Book 5”, and I usually start a series new to me with the first book. So it was an improbable thing for me to pick up to read. There’s quite a lot under the Fantasy label that’s just not worth my time. This is delightful, and you don’t have to know the series to appreciate the pair as stories. I love the setting, a sort-of rural town on the Maine coast that makes its main living from tourists during the Season. The two stories are of two different periods (1930s and 1970s, I think). It also just happens to be magical. I love the characters (although the two from this one aren’t the series protagonists). I liked it so much that I immediately located the others of the series (not easy, by title, since the others don’t have “Archer Beach: Book #x” in their titles, and the writer has quite a few listed on Amazon). If you’re going to do what I did, and start the series, the first is “Carousel Tides.”

This is a continuation of Sharon Lee’s stories about Archers Beach, Maine. It is told from the point of view of a life time Mainer. Unlike many series, the story stands alone. However, it is better to read some of the earlier books for back story.
The characters of this story are easy to like, mysterious as some may be. While there is dramatic tension, there is no outright violence and even those characters who oppose the protagonists are understandable and it is possible to sympathize.
I really like Ms. Lee’s writing and would buy any of her books sight-unseen.
