Janson’s personal enthusiasm for Tampa lets her share an honest, well-rounded look at your new hometown. It’s not difficult to fall into the easy flow of life in Florida’s Tampa.

When you own your home in Tampa Bay and live in it, you enjoy mild winters and a homestead tax exemption of up to $50,000. Plus, you get to to roam Teddy Roosevelt’s historic romping grounds where he and his Rough Riders fought the good fight out of Tampa staffing and directing the Spanish American War for Cuba. The Rough Riders is a busy service organization active to this day.

The kids have fun in Tampa with MOSI, the Glazers Children’s Museum and Lowery Park Zoo, while sports fans enjoy the Tampa Bay Rays, Bucs football, Rowdies soccer, NHL Lightening, Tampa Bay Storm arena football, and New York Yankees winter training. Shoppers have a wide venue, botiquing to bargain hunting, Neiman Marcus and Gucci to DSW and Nordstron’s Rack; Restoration Hardware and Ikea to H & M and the Ellenton Outlet Mall.

Tampa’s eating scene presents many faces — the Cuban scene in Ybor City, the Asian hub-bub of the Oceanic Asian Supermarket and Bistro, a bit of Greece, just to the northwest in Tarpon Springs, the Celebrated Wat Mongkolratanaram Thai Palace Sunday Market, colorful Ybor breweries — gems like Pane Rustica, live flamenco dancers at the Cuban Columbia, Bern’s Steak House with a winecellar of more than half-million bottles, dancing under the massive oak at Skipper’s Smokehouse and so much more!

Moving to Tampa, The Un-Tourist Guide contains many helpful links to key contacts for Tampa newcomers. Tampa’s as busy or laid-back as you and your new life make it. Use this guide to pick and choose.

First off, I want to disclose that I contributed to this book (pages 92-95 “Tampa…with Tots”). Having said that, I’m very pleased to have been a (small) part of this project. It’s a wonderful book, professionally done, thorough, and well-organized. This is something I’ll buy as gifts for friends who move to Tampa, or for those who are planning area vacations. It includes many full-color photos, and I’m having a great time making a list of the restaurants, as well as the grocery, clothing, and book stores I haven’t yet discovered. (How could I have NOT known about Oxford Exchange?) I’m so glad “Moving to Tampa” has pointed me in the right direction!
