This review is from: One Breath Away: The Hiccup Girl – From Media Darling to Convicted Killer (Mass Market Paperback)
Phelps is a terrific true crime writer, who always gives me what I want most in a book about a real murder. Like Ann Rule, he keeps the focus on the people involved, and digs up all the facets of their earlier lives that turned them into killers. He is NOT one of those true crime writers who only give you the court transcript. Also, he always shows you the anguish of all the other people involved.

So I expected to enjoy the book. But this story is truly quirky, and, unbelievably, I ended up feeling sorry for the young woman convicted of murder. That was a real surprise to me. Not because Jennifer didn’t end up embracing a criminal lifestyle, but because she was slow, and had a disease that could cause her to have impulse control.

Jennifer Mee was 15 when something happened that altered the course of her life. She got the hiccups. Of course everybody has had hiccups sometimes. But Jennifer’s decided to stay…and stay. For weeks. Nonstop.

She became famous. That Jennifer was a cute 15 year old, with eyes peeping out from long hair, made everybody wanted to interview her and watch her hiccup. She appeared on The Today Show numerous times.

Then the hiccups stopped. And so did all the celebrity interest and the razzle dazzle.

It was like having the light switched off, and suddenly you are in the dark. It would have been disorienting to anyone. But Jennifer was learning disabled, and had more trouble than all of us just deal with ordinary life.

Then Jennifer was diagnosed with Tourette’s, and put on heavy medications for the illness, which seemed to alter her personality. She began to see things and hear voices. Unable to cope with school, she dropped out. She not only took cocaine, she also started to sell it from her apartment which she shared with a spectacularly bad boyfriend, Lamont, Jennifer fell in love with the wrong man.

I remembered this girl from the national news story and love Phelps stuff. Entertaining read about how her life spun out of control.
