This is what the gaming industry needs to be, October 7, 2014

This game is the perfect example of what the gaming industry needs to be. Right off the bat there is no MP in the game…Now I’m not saying I’m against MP but some games just don’t need MP like Fallout, Skyrim, other RPG’s and this game.

This is a heavy single player experience and I FREAKING LOVE IT!!! I’m a huge Fallout fan and while this is no Fallout it will definitely scratch that itch. Two games on one disc adds up to a incredible value and IMO every ps4 owner should have this game in their collection.

I have never played the Metro series before although I really wanted to but did not have a 360 to play 2033 and later did not want to start with Last Light on ps3 without playing 2033. This redux saved me from both problems and the fact that it was also the best versions of the games with all dlc is crazy amazing.

Within the first few minutes I knew I was in for a treat. The atmosphere, the music, the narration, the Russian accents, the dark environments, the suspense, the fear, the need for survival and on and on and on…all this creates some of the best immersion in video gaming period. The metro itself is a character in the game I feel…a very important one in that as well, the metro can be scary and dark yet at times its soothing and comforting in the context of the situation. The scenario in these games is not unbelievable either…people trying to live in this post apocalyptic world. You will see kids/people begging for bullets(the currency in game), people talking about their problems or loss of loved ones, merchants selling things and trying to run their businesses, THAT AMAZING GUITAR TUNE…all this will make you feel a part of the world in a very big way and not many video games can get the player to feel as such. For the immersion alone this redux is worth the money and 5/5 stars.

The story is interesting too. Some reviews said it starts slow then picks up but I was gripped as soon as I heard the first narrative, I do admit that it gets better but it was not sluggish/slow to me at least. The weapons, looting, customization and everything was as expected and adds some minor rpg elements. Its not as detailed as Fallout but that’s fine because Metro is its own game and in a very good way. The controls all work as they should and the best part is that 2033 uses Last Light’s controls, because of this both games are smooth to play.

Overall this collection of the Metro games needs to be in every gamer’s collection. This game is what the gaming industry needs to be. I understand MP is important to people but single player needs to be as well. Don’t get me wrong, if you enjoy COD or Battlefield with their yearly installments that’s fine…BUT when companies can get away with selling unfinished/broken/buggy games then I have a problem. Metro Redux is everything I look for in a game. Story, gameplay, heavy single player focus and tons of content. Oh and a challenge too. Metro is a great challenge but not in a annoying way more in a “I got this” or “One More Time” way. I highly recommend Metro Redux to all kinds of gamers because it is a great experience and will stay with you like it will for me. The gaming industry needs more games like Metro Redux in different genres as well. Game On!!

    This game is terrible.

I started playing this damn game and it kept me up all night and I didn’t even realize it until the sun was coming up. I was even late to work and got chewed out by my boss.

Now I can’t stop myself from playing it.

    Evil. Pure Evil.

Mindblowing, Terrifying, Addictive and Engaging. From an old man at 34., March 20, 2015

First off, I should qualify everything I’m about to say by stating I’m a 34 yr old guy who took a 6 year hiatus from playing video games while I got married, had two kids and started some businesses. So, I’m probably not the best at the whole concept in terms of being a ‘hardcore gamer’, but I’m getting back into things slowly.

Given my age and the fact I always loved first person shooters (I had all the COD, Medal of Honor, Brothers in Arms games on the XBox and XBox 360) I started buying up all the first person shooters I could find when I bought the PS4 just a couple of months ago as an early birthday present to myself.

I played through both Call of Duty games, Killzone, Wolfenstein and came to this, the next ‘5-star’ game everyone seemed to be raving about on Amazon. I quickly discerned that this was actually a two-game re-boot from earlier, last-gen console versions so I thought “two games for the price of one can’t be bad” and purchase the download version on PSN.

I have to say I was hesitant on the purchase because I noted from the game info that, while this was a first person shooter, it also had a ‘monster’ vibe about it (normally I prefer realistic war games). Anyway, based on the high level of 5-star reviews I threw caution to the wind and made the purchase…

Things really didn’t start well (and I expect this may be the same for most gamers on their first run through of Metro 2033)… The first hour or two of the game was frankly disappointing and underwhelming and had me wondering whether my miserly $25 investment had even been worth it. Running around sewers shooting little guns that made a pitiful little ‘pap’ sound, killing creatures that tore me apart about 30 times before I figured out how to kill them and seemingly so-so graphics (for the PS4) didn’t bode well for the remaining x number of hours playing these two games. I even considered just giving up and forgetting about the game… but something drew me back… and I’m really glad it did.

Soon enough, the story started developing and I started to get used to the whole concept… You have to barter for your weapons, customising as you go, you gotta keep your eye on your gasmask timer (because when you start running out of air and gasping, you almost feel it on the other end of the controller) and the story of a post-apocalyptic Moscow starts to feel immersive and engaging as you plough through.

By the time you get about 2 hours into Metro 2033, you simply cannot turn away. Every time you die it’s an inescapable challenge you have to undertake and it’s worth it every time you beat that last thing that killed you. Many times that meant running out of air, getting clawed by wolf-like creatures or swooped on by flying abominations that fling you about and drop you on the ground to die.

Every gasp as you scurry around looking for a gas mask filter is truly terrifying and is strangely felt. That is one of the most ingenius elements of this game – the urgency created by the watch ticking down on your wrist as your air runs out is panic-inducing and utterly compelling in terms of gameplay.

In terms of the two games, I felt Metro Last Light was the more polished and engaging of the two (potentially because it is the second in the sequence and by that stage the game-makers knew exactly where to take it) but Metro 2033 is an excellent, worthy game in its’ own right and very compelling as an introduction to the story. In fact, it has to be played for Metro Last Light to be fully understood in terms of the timeline, storyline and the protagonist’s struggle through life. The second game is also a tale of redemption as things come to light that were not previously known. From that perspective, the story, in itself is one of the most engaging and riveting of any video game I have ever played.

There were sequences in the story which had me wanting to smash the controller, don’t get me wrong. I played one particular sequence in 2033 where you have set explosives in the underground station where the ammo runs out fast and the monsters keep coming… that was the most frustrating level I’ve ever played… but I felt a real sense of accomplishment when I finally won and the black of the cut-scene came. Also there were more than a few times that I ran out of air while waiting for team-mates to open doors or catch up with me. In the end, these sequences normally mean you’re missing a gas mask filter somewhere nearby which will solve your problems (you just gotta keep looking).

Both games are fairly linear stories, but you do have plenty of decisions to make, large spaces to investigate and replays to try to speed through, especially as your air runs out and you try and scour every nook and cranny of the level for one. last. filter. There’s no better feeling that seeing a box in a corner or a skeleton with a not-needed gasmask hiding in the…
