Great product for prevention, August 18, 2011

This kind of Desitin doesn’t have the zinc like the regular kind…doesn’t work quite as quickly for clearing diaper rash, but it is great for prevention. Plus it has other uses: cuts, scrapes, lotion like cream (similar to vaseline). But if my baby already has a rash, I will go for the original or creamy Desitin.

Desitin is great for preventing diaper rash. I am a nurse…the best way to apply Desitin is as a prevention measure. Either use it daily or at night when you know the baby will be sitting in pee awhile. If my baby is getting diarrhea, then I apply it at every change so the next poop doesn’t actually touch the skin itself, just the cream.

Most importantly, the skin must be DRY when you apply the cream. The cream creates a moisture barrier on the skin to keep out bad moisture (urine, poop), but make sure you are not locking in moisture (from wiping)…let the bottom air dry first. If your baby does get a rash, the product will burn some..I like to apply a bit of powder and then the cream…doesn’t seem to hurt so much and still works to heal.

Hope this helps some new moms. The product is great when used like it is meant to.

Every baby gets red ‘down there’ now and then and Desitin really provides relief from the pain and itch. This jar format also allows you to be more generous with layering it on. The more red my child’s skin is, the more guilty I feel as a mother. The more guilty I feel, the more Desitin I slather on. This helps the guilt.
