Crusoe Flute

A few nice Destin Florida Hotels images I found:

This is the finished soda-fired piece that showed up here on flickr.com a few months ago: www.flickr.com/photos/chenoweth/2269510995/in/set-7215760… in its greenware stage.

The footprint is intended to give the piece some sense of scale…my size eleven’s seem to do the trick.

Displaying these trumphlutes poses a number of challenges, one of which is providing a context for the work in/on something besides traditional displays. This is an effort to use a piece (or two) in a setting where there is obvious juxtaposition of the piece into a place where one wouldn’t expect to find it. That, philosophically, is an issue with many clay musical instruments…people don’t expect to find this sort of thing and the surprise of something crafted from mud that produces sound in a whimsical form is much of the appeal.

This, too, is begging for some sort of whimsical story of primitive music, native craftsmanship, discovery, intrigue, and general BS. The castle-like complex in the distance (actually hotels/condos in Destin, Florida) and the bare footprint in the sand in the foreground must be elements of the story.

I wonder if Alvins Island has a deal with the hotels concerning disposal of abandoned boogie boards.
